Effective thermal management in this compact embedded hardware is therefore crucial to ensure the performance and reliability of embedded systems. Due to increasing miniaturisation, heat sinks in HMI displays and panel PCs must be designed to be ever smaller and more efficient at the same time. This is because as the performance of processors in embedded computing increases, their power dissipation also rises rapidly. This heat must be dissipated safely. In most cases, standard heat sinks are out of the question for reasons of space. Or their performance is not sufficient to dissipate the heat of the components from an embedded system quickly enough to the outside.

Passive cooling systems for embedded computers
Passive cooling systems are the preferred choice as they work without mechanical components. These heat sink solutions are energy efficient as they consume no power, operate silently and require no wear and maintenance. Passive heat sinks use an increased surface area to optimise heat dissipation, as well as heat spreader solutions with integrated heat pipes and heat sinks with copper inlays. They are therefore widely used in embedded system design.

Housings as heat sinks for IPC electronics
Normally, the housing is used to protect electronic components from dust and contact. However, it can also help to cool the devices. The material of the housing is important for dissipating heat from processors or power supplies in embedded systems.
EKL therefore includes the housing of an HMI display, for example, in the cooling concept wherever possible. Embedded hardware housings can be made from materials such as steel, aluminium, galvanised steel or stainless steel to enable efficient cooling. Metals conduct heat well and distribute it over the entire surface of the enclosure. Metal enclosures also provide good protection for your embedded systems against electromagnetic interference.
Die-cast aluminium heat sinks in particular can also serve as housings. Complex geometries can be realised in almost any size using this manufacturing process. Handles and mounting elements can already be integrated into the die-cast design. This reduces the time and effort involved in assembling and reworking your HMI displays / POS displays.
