A key feature of heatpipe heat sinks is the utilisation of the phase transition of a liquid within small, highly thermally conductive copper tubes (heat pipes): When heated at the heat source, the water in the heat sink pipe evaporates and condenses again at colder points. This enables heat to be transferred quickly and efficiently to another location. Heat pipe cooling (heat pipe sink) combines the advantages of heat pipes with those of traditional and cost-effective heat sinks, such as extruded aluminium heat sinks. This results in a compact design and makes heat pipes ideal for applications where space is limited. In addition, heatpipe heat sinks operate passively: they require no external power source and contain no moving parts, which makes them particularly reliable.

Ingenious physics: how heat transport works in a heat pipe
A heat pipe is an efficient heat transfer mechanism based on a two-phase heat transfer principle. It is a metallic, tubular body that is hermetically sealed and can transfer heat over long distances with minimal losses. These components are particularly common in the computer industry, where they are used in CPU coolers to transfer heat from the contact surface to the cooling fins. The heat is absorbed at the evaporation end of the heat pipe and released into the ambient air at the condensation end. The transport process utilises the latent heat of evaporation and condensation in the adiabatic section of the heat pipe. An internal vacuum lowers the boiling point and thus enables heat transfer at lower temperatures.
