Skived fin heat sink with close-cut fins
Peeled, scraped or skived: In any case, ultra-fine cooling fins in one piece
The special feature of the skived fin manufacturing process is that the cooling fins are "scraped" out of a single copper or aluminium metal block. This enables high precision and a very tight fin structure. This technique - also known as the skiving process - produces scraped radiators with narrow fin spacing, which is not possible with classic extruded heat sinks.
Advantages of the skived fin process in heat sink production
- Favourable tooling costs and therefore also suitable for small batches
- Very high thermal cooling capacity thanks to the high density of the cooling fins
- Lightweight, compact and yet powerful - ideal for space-limited applications.
- Very small heat sinks with fine fins and small fin spacing of < 0.3 mm possible
- Very large heat sinks with fin widths of up to 900 mm and fin heights of over 120 mm possible
- Optimum mechanical and thermal connection of base plate and cooling fins as they are cut directly from the material
- Cost-effective and environmentally friendly
In contrast to bonded or soldered versions, cut finned heat sinks from skived fin production offer minimised thermal resistance. There is no obstruction of the heat transfer from the base plate to the individual fins by foreign material. Skived finned heat sinks are manufactured from pure copper or a thermally highly conductive aluminium alloy.
Increased performance of skived fin heat sinks through a combination of different techniques
The skiving process turns a metal block into heat sinks with very fine and dense fins that have a high specific power density. In combination with other cooling technologies, the cooling performance can be significantly increased, making them ideal for high-performance electronics.
Skived Fin heat sink+ fan
The combination of skived fin heat sinks with fans creates a fast dissipation of the power loss, which enables higher cooling capacities. This technology is particularly advantageous in environments with little or no convection as it does not rely solely on natural airflow. Forced ventilation allows increased fin density for a larger surface area, which further increases heat exchange and therefore cooling efficiency. EKL offers a wide range of its own fan models as well as fans from well-known brands such as ebm-papst, SANYO DENKI, ADDA, JAMICON, STK and Everflow.
Skived Fin heat sink+ heat pipe
The rapid heat spread means that heat loss is quickly channelled away from the source. Heatpipes are particularly effective at transporting heat over longer distances, which enables the temperature to be distributed evenly across the entire heat sink. This contributes significantly to the avoidance of hotspots.
Skived Fin heat sink+ vapour chamber
The combination of the rapid heat spread of the Vapor Chamber with the fine, precise fins of the Skived Fin heat sinks creates an even heat distribution. The Vapor Chamber is lighter than the alternative, solid copper plate, which is particularly advantageous in mobile applications. This technology also effectively prevents the formation of hotspots.

Peak performance with active cooling through fan support
The contact surfaces to the electronic component (e.g. semiconductor mounting surface) are milled precisely flat. Skived fin heat sinks are ideal for cooling thermoelectric modules and similar power modules. The low tooling costs for skived fins enable rapid prototype development and low-cost small series production. The dense arrangement of the cooling fins results in an extremely high surface area in a small space. If the chimney draught in the narrow spaces between the fins is not sufficient for natural air circulation, heat dissipation in the skived fin heat sink is actively supported by a fan.
Added value and extras
Our full service goes beyond the mere development, series production and logistics of your heat sinks. Do you need special holes or milling on your heat sinks? Do you want your heat sink to not only dissipate a lot of heat, but also look stylish? Would you like a product ready-to-plug-in with all accessories?

Surface finishing
Our range includes various surface finishes to create a durable, corrosion-resistant surface. Nickel plating increases wear resistance and lustre. Chromating and passivation, especially with Surtec 650, provide additional protection against corrosion. Powder coating is another option for a robust and durable coloured surface. Painting and cathodic dip coating round off our wide range of surface colours and textures.
Attachments & accessories
Depending on the application, screws, springs or push pins ensure the secure and stable attachment of the heat sinks. Backplates provide additional stability and improved heat dissipation. Heat-conducting pastes and pads are naturally part of our range to enable optimum heat transfer between the heat sink and the heat source.
Secure packaging for transport
With a focus on optimum protection during transport, we develop packaging that not only fits perfectly but is also robust. Another important aspect of the range is the use of recyclable materials that contribute to sustainability and environmental friendliness.
Skived Fin high-performance heat sinks for PV, IT and TC
This technology is particularly advantageous for high-performance electronics where a compact design and high heat dissipation are required. In addition, this process does not incur any mould costs, which also makes it attractive for small series and individual pieces. Applications can be found in computers and electronic components, telecommunications equipment, industrial devices and components, high-power LED lamps and inverters for photovoltaic systems.
