Heat sink with crimped fins for high cooling capacity
Lightweight and powerful electronics cooling in a customised design
Crimped heat sinks are known for their high performance and flexibility in use. Ideally, they are made from a combination of a copper base plate and aluminium cooling fins. The high thermal conductivity of copper ensures rapid heat spreading and heat distribution to the aluminium fins. This favours optimised heat dissipation to the large aluminium surface. The high-strength mechanical connection, which is created by pressing the aluminium cooling fins into the base plate, results in very low thermal resistance. This manufacturing process does not require soldering or gluing.
Advantages of the crimping process in heat sink production
- Solderless connection for simple, distortion-free assembly
- Purely mechanical process ensures a reliable connection with very low thermal resistance
- Copper-aluminium combination optimally combines high thermal conductivity with weight reduction
- Large number of thin fins increases the surface area
- Flexible design possible without fin interlinking
- Optimum ratio of weight, size and cooling capacity results in effective and economical cooling
- Performance can be increased with heat pipes
- Various surface finishes possible
(chromating, painting, powder coating, etc.)
The use of punched aluminium fins creates a very large surface area for heat radiation. This saves weight and makes the heat sink very light. In addition, the fins can be cut precisely to the application using a customised punched shape, creating a distinctive design for the heat sink. Crimped heat sinks are suitable for various surface finishes such as painting, chromating or powder coating.
Increased performance of crimped coolers through a combination of different techniques
Crimped heat sinks offer an efficient solution to thermal management problems, especially when combined with other cooling technologies. The combination of copper and aluminium allows for high power density, while the ability to use many thin fins maximises the surface area for heat exchange. In combination with forced ventilation or liquid coolers, as well as surface treatments such as powder coating, the cooling performance can be further increased.
Crimped heat sink+ fan
The combination with a fan promotes the rapid removal of heat from the cooling fins and offers the possibility of achieving higher cooling capacities. Forced ventilation is ideal in environments with little or no convection. The fin density can be increased, thus improving heat dissipation. At the same time, a smaller installation space is sufficient for the cooling solution. The reduced size - compared to systems with free convection - therefore allows a more compact design. EKL offers a wide range of its own fan models as well as fans from well-known brands such as ebm-papst, SANYO DENKI, ADDA, JAMICON, STK and Everflow.
Crimped heat sink+ copper plate
A copper plate as a connecting element between the component and crimped fins enables faster heat dissipation. This results in more efficient heat dissipation - especially for high-performance components. The weight saving compared to a full copper cooler results in a lighter overall design. The copper plate buffers the component's power peaks, which ensures more stable performance even under high loads.
Crimped heat sink+ heatpipe
The faster heat spread through heat pipes distributes the heat efficiently over the crimped heat sink, which enables even heat distribution. This avoids hotspots and the heat can be transported to more distant locations, which is particularly relevant in compact systems. In addition, this combination of manufacturing processes enables weight savings without compromising cooling performance.
Crimped heat sink+ vapour chamber
The rapid heat spread of the vapour chamber enables efficient heat transfer over the entire surface of the crimped heat sink, while the lower weight compared to solid copper plates facilitates handling and integration into systems. Even heat distribution ensures optimum cooling performance by avoiding hotspots.

Surface finishing
Our range includes various surface finishes to create a durable, corrosion-resistant surface. Nickel plating increases wear resistance and lustre. Chromating and passivation, especially with Surtec 650, provide additional protection against corrosion. Powder coating is another option for a robust and durable coloured surface. Painting and cathodic dip coating round off our wide range of surface colours and textures.
Attachments & accessories
Depending on the application, screws, springs or push pins ensure the secure and stable attachment of the heat sinks. Backplates provide additional stability and improved heat dissipation. Heat-conducting pastes and pads are naturally part of our range to enable optimum heat transfer between the heat sink and the heat source.
Secure packaging for transport
With a focus on optimum protection during transport, we develop packaging that not only fits perfectly but is also robust. Another important aspect of the range is the use of recyclable materials that contribute to sustainability and environmental friendliness.
Crimped heat sinks in electronic systems for high-performance electronics
The crimped heatsinks are often used in high-performance electronics that rely on efficient heat dissipation without fans in confined spaces. These include, for example, high-end graphics cards, CPUs and LEDs, which generate a high amount of heat and require reliable cooling that is as passive as possible. The ability of a crimped heat sink to distribute heat quickly and over a larger heat sink surface area makes it a favoured choice for such applications.
