Extruded aluminium heat sinks by the extrusion process
Extruded heat sinks as a classic cooling solution and basis for high-performance combinations
With extruded aluminium heat sinks, large surfaces can be created cost-effectively in order to quickly dissipate power loss away from the electronic component. The cooling fins passively dissipate the energy to the surrounding air through heat radiation and convection. Ideally, they are arranged vertically to support natural air circulation through the chimney effect and have a black coating. This is because dark-coloured objects not only absorb more heat, they also radiate it better through long-wave infrared heat radiation.
Advantages of extruded heat sinks
- Low mould costs and inexpensive material
- Can be easily combined with other production technologies
- Proven standard process for heat sink production
- Ideal for medium and large series of an individually optimised cooling profile
- Various surface finishes possible (anodising, nickel plating, painting, powder coating)
Heat sink aluminium for the continuous casting process consists of special alloys in order to be pressed out of the forming die in a smooth and dimensionally stable manner. The variety of possible cross-sections is enormous and ranges from simple comb fins to very finely modelled fin structures and hollow chamber profiles.
Increased performance of profiled heat sinks through a combination of different techniques
The aluminium profiles produced using the extrusion process are an excellent basis for combining with other cooling technologies due to their material properties and the ability to create complex shapes. Profile heat sinks offer good value for money and can be customised to specific requirements thanks to their easy machinability.
Extruded heat sinks+ fan
Where natural convection is not sufficient for cooling electronic components, forced ventilation ensures rapid heat dissipation and draws in cold air from outside the enclosure. In combination with a higher fin density, significantly higher cooling capacities are possible. Compared to cooling by free convection alone, this combination with a fan requires less installation space and the cooling solution can be significantly smaller. EKL offers a wide range of its own fan models as well as fans from well-known brands such as ebm-papst, SANYO DENKI, ADDA, JAMICON, STK and Everflow.
Profile heat sink+ copper insert
Using a copper plate as a connecting element between the component and the extruded heat sink enables faster heat dissipation. This enables more efficient heat dissipation - especially for high-performance components. The weight saving compared to a solid copper cooler results in a lighter overall design. The copper plate buffers the component's power peaks, which ensures more stable performance even under high loads.
Profile heat sink+ heatpipes
The faster heat spread through heat pipes distributes the heat efficiently over the profile heat sink, which enables even heat distribution. This avoids hotspots and the heat can be transported to more distant locations, which is particularly relevant in compact systems. In addition, this combination of manufacturing processes enables weight savings without compromising cooling performance.
Profile heat sink+ vapour chamber
Exceptionally fast heat distribution is made possible by combining a profiled heat sink with a vapour chamber. This technology is more effective and lighter than conventional solid copper solutions and also offers the flexibility to be mounted in any installation position. In addition, the even heat distribution prevents hotspots and ensures a low temperature gradient. This makes them an ideal solution for demanding thermal applications where space and weight savings are crucial.

Surface finishing
Our range includes various surface finishes to create a durable, corrosion-resistant surface. Nickel plating increases wear resistance and lustre. Chromating and passivation, especially with Surtec 650, provide additional protection against corrosion. Powder coating is another option for a robust and durable coloured surface. Painting and cathodic dip coating round off our wide range of surface colours and textures.
Attachments & accessories
Depending on the application, screws, springs or push pins ensure the secure and stable attachment of the heat sinks. Backplates provide additional stability and improved heat dissipation. Heat-conducting pastes and pads are naturally part of our range to enable optimum heat transfer between the heat sink and the heat source.
Secure packaging for transport
With a focus on optimum protection during transport, we develop packaging that not only fits perfectly but is also robust. Another important aspect of the range is the use of recyclable materials that contribute to sustainability and environmental friendliness.
Aluminium cooling fins in typical application areas
Aluminium heat sinks are popular in many applications due to their high thermal conductivity and efficiency in heat dissipation. The extrusion process makes it possible to produce heat sinks in many different sizes and shapes. Aluminium itself is one of the metals with the highest thermal conductivity after silver, copper and gold, which makes it the material with the best price-performance ratio for heat sinks. In addition, extruded aluminium heat sinks offer an excellent balance between cost, performance, volume and weight.
